Zagreb Witches or Coprnice - Part One

NOMEN EST OMEN- THE NAME IS A SIGN

Let's start our story about the witches of Zagreb from their name. In this part of Croatia, it's common to use the word coprnica (tzoh-pehr -neeh-tzah) for a witch. It's kind of a cute word, it doesn't really carry negative connotations.

Do you know where the name comes from?

INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY OF ZAGREB WITCHES

Halloween is fast approaching. Here in Croatia, we call that evening Noc Vjestica - The Night of the Witches. It is therefore more than convenient to speak about witchcraft as Autumn is coming near.

Legendfest

The first Legendfest of 2014 is the newcomer to the Zagreb County I just mentioned. It's happening in Lukavec, in the region of Turopolje, just minutes away from the capital. The festival's main theme is fantastic creatures called moguts. People once believed that each village in Turopolje had its own mighty guardian - a mogut. Moguts are shapeshifters, they can appear as anything from hound dogs to dragons,  but are mostly found in the shape of a rough peasant. Stormy nights are sometimes evidence of a fight between two creatures of the kind. Each of them aims to protect its own village and harm the other mogut's one with the help of the immense thunder and lightning.
